The exhibition is drawn primarily from the Museum’s collection, augmented with several generous and important loans from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Norton Simon Museum, the Huntington Library, and the Charles E. In exchange for arduous labor, monastic life offered the comfort of meditation, ascetic discipline, and eternal peace. This text was created at the monastery of Lindisfarne. Illuminated Manuscript Materials and Production: Until the 13th century, manuscripts were created solely under the devotion of monks and nuns across Europe. One of the most stunning and famous examples of an illuminated manuscript is the Lindisfarne Gospels, which date from the early 8th century. These highly prized objects allow us to glimpse, admire, and study a world gone by, as well as its peoples, different belief systems, and an interconnected global history of human thought and ideas about art. A wonderful example of this ‘Winchester’ style is the magnificent Winchester Benedictional.The Winchester Benedictional is one of a group of magnificent illuminated manuscripts probably made in Winchester in the later decades of the 10th century, during and following the tenure of Æthelwold, (later saint), bishop of Winchester from 963 to 984. Illuminated manuscripts were produced from the early Middle Ages into the Renaissance, with the art form declining after the introduction of printing. Explore several exemplars, including the finest German illuminated manuscript of the 12th century, the Stammheim Missal, as well as. ![]() Considered major works of art, they were written and decorated by hand with gold, silver, lapis, and other precious materials. This exhibition features illuminated manuscripts and painted book arts from the 9th through the 17th century that bring to life in stunning ways the real and imagined places that one encounters on their pages. Illuminated manuscripts are books from early medieval times through the Renaissance. Now, the Getty Museum reminds us of the incredible process that went into creating these medieval illuminated manuscripts. In the premodern era, land and sea routes connected the remarkably mobile peoples of Europe, Africa, and Asia, many of whom were far more aware of the world beyond their doorsteps than one might realize. Long before the industrial printing press, hand-crafted manuscripts were painstakingly precise pieces of art that catered to an elite society where only a precious few could read.
